After a career teaching English to college and high school students, Diane Moroff has shifted to making art full time, perfecting her use of paper to create ingenious collages illustrating those quiet moments in everyday life. Originally from New York City, Diane now calls the Hudson Valley home. Her studies in paper are broad, with subjects ranging from still life and landscape to cars, windows and water. Working from an extensive collection of textured, colored paper, she captures the simple beauty to be found in the world. “In the last decade, I have shifted to making visual art. Box sculptures made from wooden dowels, cardboard, and paper evolved into drawing on cardboard, which became collages. I have lived in the Hudson Valley since 2018 and am grateful for the many ways in which it has expanded my vision and world view.I love working with paper, which challenges me to evoke depth, detail, and distance with a limited palette and choice of texture. My process—taking photos, drawing on cardboard, color-coding each shape, cutting, covering with paper, cutting again, and then assembling upside down—takes me through differently satisfying artistic activities. That said, I am more affected by painters like Fairfield Porter and Richard Diebenkorn than by collage artists. I aspire to stimulate the emotional responses for others that those artists do for me.”
