Suzanne Sanger is a prolific artist specializing in abstract fiber art. A graduate of DePauw University in Indiana, Suzanne raised a family before emerging as a fiber artist in the late 80’s, when she taught herself to quilt by finishing a coverlet started by her Aunt Blanche. She has since gone on to complete thousands of textile-based artworks.
Suzanne finds that fabric and thread meet all her criteria for self-expression. She harnesses the textural play of light and shadow across a quilted piece, the bright contrast or subtle lure of color and texture that thread brings to the work. Fiber art is visual and tactile. It is multi-layered with virtually no limitations to one’s vision. It can be filled with color or depend on texture alone. Other media can be introduced to enhance fabric and thread. Endless variety is possible. Boredom is out of the question.
Over the years, Suzanne has moved away from traditional subjects and focused on abstract art as her expression of choice. She incorporates techniques like fabric painting, embroidery, needlework and beading to add texture and richness to her tableaux, and her work continues to evolve in both subject and technique.
